Washington, DC, July 12, 2011 – Leonardo Academy announced that The World Bank’s Washington, DC “I” and “J” Buildings, owned and managed by The World Bank, have been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED®-EB: O&M) v2009 Gold Certification. This certification recognizes that The World Bank has implemented continuous sustainability improvement measures guided by LEED-EB, a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Leonardo Academy was the LEED consultant for these projects supporting the successful achievement of Gold Certification.

LEED®-EB Gold Certification is a prestigious rating given to existing buildings for maximizing operational efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts. The I Building earned 75 points and the J Building achieved 69 points to achieve a Gold performance level under the LEED-EB v2009 rating system.

The World Bank implemented many green actions to achieve Gold Certification, including:

I Building:

  • Implemented water efficiency measures that reduced water consumption by 430,000 gallons annually. The improvements have a simple payback of less than three years.
  • Diverted 100% of the electronic equipment solid waste from the landfill as part of a comprehensive recycling program.
  • Purchased renewable energy equal to 100% of their annual energy usage.
  • Achieved an Energy Star Label with a rating of 86 out of a possible 100 points.
  • Documented an emissions reduction of 37% and 6,135 tons of CO2 equivalents when compared to the national average through Leonardo Academy’s Cleaner & Greener® Program.
  • Installed adapted plant species on a green roof that reduces building cooling load, stormwater discharge and the urban heat island effect.
  • Implemented a Green Cleaning Policy mandating the use of 100% green cleaning products in the building and on the grounds.
  • Developed multiple outreach efforts to educate and motivate building occupants to adopt sustainable practices.
  • Documented a 73% reduction in conventional commuting trips. 

J Building:

  • Implemented water efficiency measures that reduced water consumption by 360,000 gallons annually. The improvements have a simple payback of three years.
  • Diverted 100% of the electronic equipment solid waste from the landfill as part of a comprehensive recycling and program. 
  • Purchased renewable energy from Wind Current equal to 100% of their annual energy usage. • Achieved an Energy Star Label with a rating of 83 out of a possible 100 points.
  • Documented an emissions reduction of 34% and 3,599 tons of CO2 equivalents when compared to the national average through Leonardo Academy’s Cleaner & Greener Program.
  • Recycling of greater than 65% of dialy consumable materials in the waste stream.
  • Implemented a Green Cleaning Policy mandating the use of 100% green cleaning products in the building and on the grounds.
  • Developed multiple outreach efforts to educate and motivate building occupants to adopt sustainable practices.
  • Documented a 59% reduction in conventional commuting trips.
